CHILDREN’S EYE EXAMS IN ABBOTSFORD

Did you know that around 80% of what a child learns is through their eyes?

From discovering the magic of colors to exploring the pages of their favorite books, healthy eyes play a pivotal role in every aspect of your child's life.

Regular eye exams are crucial for children as vision problems can impact their learning and development. Early detection and treatment of any eye issues are vital for ensuring your child's overall eye health.

WHEN TO SCHEDULE AN EYE EXAM FOR YOUR CHILD?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children have exams at the following intervals:

Comprehensive eye examination in between the ages of 6 to 12 months

Another examination in between the ages of 2 and 5 as their visual system grows and develops

Annual comprehensive examinations from age 6 and continuing until adulthood

High-Risk: Children with a family history of eye conditions or certain health issues may need more frequent eye exams.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR CHILD’S EYE EXAM AT OUR OFFICE:

Visual Acuity Test: Assessing how well your child can see at various distances.

Eye Movement and Coordination: Checking how well the eyes work together.

Eye Health Evaluation: Examining the overall health of the eyes.

Refraction Test: Determining if your child needs glasses.

Eye Muscle Function: Checking for any issues with eye muscle movement

Color Vision Test: Assessing color perception

HOW IS COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAMINATION DIFFERENT FROM A VISION SCREENING?

Specialized equipment and procedures, which are not available as part of a vision screening program, are needed to adequately evaluate eyes and vision.

Only a doctor of optometry or ophthalmologist can conduct a comprehensive eye and vision examination. These doctors have the specialized training necessary to make a definitive diagnosis and prescribe treatment.

Eye exams provide detailed information about eye health, refractive errors, and potential eye diseases, while vision screenings offer a basic assessment of visual acuity. While vision screenings can help identify potential vision concerns, a comprehensive eye examination is essential for a thorough assessment of eye health and vision function.

It is recommended to have your child’s regular comprehensive eye exams every year in addition to any vision screenings to ensure comprehensive eye care.
